The Executive Committee of the EAERE Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiative (DEI) has been set up in 2023. Members of the Executive Committee will contribute to the definition of the Association’s strategy to secure progress in these topics, to build the Committee’s activity plan and explore fund-raising options. Members’ mandate will last from January 1st, 2023 until December 31st, 2028, and may be renewed.
Statement
In response to an increasing demand from EAERE members to initiate a pathway leading to a common understanding on how to make progress in diversity, equity and inclusion issues, and support initiatives aiming to eliminate impediments to create an inclusive environment in the economic profession, EAERE promotes an initiative on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) within the Association. This initiative will promote fora for discussions, informing and involving people, showcase data, mapping the main problems and identify goals with the final ambition of possibly proposing solutions.
In demonstration of its unwavering commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), EAERE has launched an initiative dedicated to these important issues. Our aim is to facilitate open discussion, raise awareness, and actively engage individuals in addressing DEI challenges within the academic community and with allied disciplines. We believe that these values are essential for our profession. This commitment to DEI will ensure that our community is diverse, equitable and inclusive and our research not only advances knowledge in our field, but also contributes to a more equitable and inclusive world order.
To realize our vision, the Executive Committee of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiative (DEI) was established in 2023. This committee will design the Association’s strategy for progress in these areas, create an activity plan, and explore funding opportunities for its activities and initiatives. By focusing on strategy and planning, we aim to make meaningful and lasting changes in the way the field of environmental economics addresses DEI issues, setting a foundation for future efforts.
The commitment of our members and institutions to promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) goes beyond mere administrative duties; it represents a heightened awareness and sensitiveness towards these critical issues within the field of environmental, development and resource economics research. DEI considerations should be regarded as the basis of professional conduct as well as an essential component of research, addressing instances where discrimination, equity, and inclusion factors come into play.
With this approach, the committee envisions a future where DEI is not merely a goal or a modus operandi but a guiding principle that shapes how EAERE members conduct their research. This ensures that our members’ work does not overlook instances of discrimination, equity concerns, or exclusion when they arise within study endeavors.
Furthermore, we aspire to develop a safe and inclusive space for open discussions, the sharing of ideas, and the development of projects aimed at combating discrimination and fostering a more inclusive environment within the field of environmental, development and resource economics. Our committee is committed to creating an atmosphere where all voices are heard, respected, and valued, and where innovative solutions to DEI challenges can flourish. By offering this platform, we seek to catalyse positive change and drive collective action toward a more equitable and sustainable future.

Although DEI Initiative has not been conceived to collect complaints, uncomfortable situations that our members may experience will be taken into consideration to shape our future activities within the initiative itself.
